    @djedward27 protein shakes today are great, and they should be taken after workouts, since they are pre digested. it will circulate through the digestive tract much quicker than dense foods…your meals during the day should be dense but your post workout should always be protein shake…a dense food will sit in your stomach for 2hours…therefore losing the 30-45 minute window of opportunity.

    @thedanwriter1 The only problem with that is, oatmeal is a complex/ slow releasing carb. You want something fast acting, something that is high glycemic like honey or a banana,

    @djedward27 To build muscle you MUST take in protein. Your body will not build muscle without it. It does not necessarily have to come from a protein powder, in fact it would be more beneficial to get your protein from nutrient dense foods such as eggs, chicken breast, cottage cheese, and fish.
